PORTLAND, Maine — The state medical examiner says the 18-year-old woman found slain in a Portland apartment on Memorial Day was the victim of “homicidal violence with neck injuries.”

The cause of death had been withheld pending a positive identification of Zoe Sarnacki, a former Deering High School student who had been living in South Portland. The Portland Press Herald said identification was made using DNA.

Sarnacki’s body was found in 27-year-old Chad Gurney’s apartment on Cumberland Avenue. Gurney is charged with murdering Sarnacki and then setting a fire in the apartment.

Sarnacki’s sister, Kristen Kosnow, had quoted police as telling her Gurney strangled Sarnacki and then decapitated her, before setting her on fire.
