Bangor Hydro gives $5,000 to land trust

BANGOR, Maine — Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. presented a $5,000 check to Bangor Land Trust on Tuesday to help protect land in the Penjajawoc Stream Watershed.

Bangor Land Trust owns 300 acres adjacent to a 1.5-mile Bangor Hydro power line near Penjajawoc Marsh.

“Before we begin building power lines, we meet with state agencies, conservation groups and recreation groups to identify special resources and sensitive areas,” said Gerry Chasse, Bangor Hydro’s vice president of transmission and distribution operations. “It’s important to us that we establish a route with the support of land-owners, the conservation community and towns.”

Lucy Quimby, president of Bangor Land Trust, was grateful for the donation.

“As a land trust in an urban area, we wrestle daily with the challenge of how to preserve ecological value in the face of other human needs,” she said. “Our joint stewardship of this power line is an example of just that.”

Bangor Hydro is owned by Emera Inc. of Canada and serves nearly 200,000 customers in eastern and northern Maine.
