TROY – Ruth E. Alley, wife, mother, nurse and friend to so many, died May 24, 2009, at her home, after a wonderful life and courageous battle with cancer. Ruth always was, and will continue to be, an angel among us. After a successful career in the travel business, raising five happy children, and volunteering for years and countless hours for Unity Volunteer Ambulance Service, Ruth achieved her dream and graduated college as registered nurse in 1995. She was bestowed with the title of Student of the Year, and her love of nursing, particularly hospice and patient care, allowed her to apply her loving touch to many appreciative souls. Ruth is survived by her husband, Stephen Alley of Troy; her father, Albert Doggart of Falmouth, Mass.; sisters, Diane Poretsky and Gail Tomlinson of New Hampshire; brother, Alan Doggart of Indiana; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Michael Sungy of Massachusetts; daughter, Heidi Doherty of New Hampshire; son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Deborah Sanville of Massachusetts; daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Charles Rumsey of Maine; son and daughter-in-law, Derek and Elizabeth Sanville of New Hampshire; and stepson, Michael Alley of Massachusetts. Ruth will be remembered fondly and with smiles by her 16 grandchildren, who will share adoring stories with Ruth’s five great-grandchildren. Ruth has joined her beloved mother and sister to watch over us all. Ruth’s family thanks both JulieAnne and Bertha from HealthReach for the respect and care they provided both to their brave patient and those who kept vigil and watched over Ruth until the very end. JulieAnne reminded us that Ruth finished her life the very same way she lived it: with character. A celebration of Ruth Alley’s life will be held noon-3 p.m. June 12, at Unity Community Center, Unity.
