UNITY, Maine — FUTURE MSAD 3 board members have announced their new campaign, First Things First, a fund drive to help lay the groundwork for future athletic enhancements at the new Mount View School in Thorndike.
FUTURE MSAD 3 already has conducted the campaign for the Clifford Performing Arts Center in the new K-12 school set to open Sept. 1, the group said in a press release. While FUTURE’s first capital campaign supported the performing arts at Mount View, with 400 donors contributing more than $630,000, the next cam-paign will focus on the school’s athletic and recreational facilities.
Chairwoman Vicki Kupferman of Knox said the original board had set its sights on funding the performing arts campaign and then athletics, with the intent of funding specific enhancements that the state and the district could not fund.
The state is funding an eight-lane rubberized track, a multipurpose field inside the track, and a new high school soccer field. Two middle school athletic fields (baseball-soccer and softball-field hockey) also were covered by state funds. All other athletic improvements must be privately funded through the capital campaign.
First Things First is a pre-campaign to raise $107,575 by Sept. 30. Funds will support the infrastructure that need to be in place before other athletic enhancements are added, Kupferman explained in the release.
While a new, permanent outdoor concessions building to include athletic storage areas and public restrooms will be funded later, the group now is raising funds to have the building’s utilities, water, power and sewer put in place and capped while the site is still under construction this summer.
In mid-June, the demolition of the old Mount View School will begin, to make way for the all-weather track, multipurpose field and new high school soccer field. The utilities work will take place this summer and will be funded by contributions to First Things First.
