Maine halts car restoration program

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine has halted a program to teach prison inmates to restore cars, which are then auctioned.

The Saving Cars Behind Bars program at the Bolduc Correctional Facility in Warren was discontinued after a state audit showed it lacked oversight and proper bookkeeping. No fraud or ethical violations were found.

The Times Record of Brunswick quotes state Corrections Commissioner Martin Magnusson as saying the program was discontinued regardless of the audit by the state Office of Program Evaluation and Government Accountability. Magnusson said the program was worthwhile but had problems.

The program taught inmates car-restoration skills to prepare them to enter the work force after their release.
