Numerous complaints from puzzle lovers have led the Bangor Daily News to switch its daily crossword provider for the third time this year.
Beginning on Monday, June 1, BDN readers will find the crossword puzzles of Eugene Sheffer nestled among the comics at the back of the newspaper. Sheffer is a respected editor of crosswords whose work is distributed by King Features.
Our new puzzle replaces the crosswords edited by Stanley Newman and put out by Newsday of New York, which we started running about a month ago. Many readers contacted us to let us know the Newsday puzzles were too easy early in the week and too difficult on Saturdays. We switched to that puzzle after a brief trial of a crossword syndicated by the Los Angeles Times drew a strong negative response.
Wayne Robert Williams of the Chicago Tribune, whose crossword puzzles we ran for several years, retired earlier this year after a long and distinguished career. His departure led us to shop for other suppliers.
We at the Bangor Daily News hope you enjoy the efforts of Mr. Sheffer. Let us know what you think. Contact me at 990-8238 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
