CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Maine has been cited for its innovative child welfare program which the governor says keeps kids safer and places them more often with their families.

The Harvard Kennedy School’s Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation presented the award to Maine.

Gov. John Baldacci on Wednesday was in Cambridge, Mass., to discuss Maine’s program, which was chosen as one of 16 initiatives to advance out of an original applicant pool of about 600 programs.

Baldacci said children are safer, are placed earlier and more often with families. He said fewer children are in the foster care system, and of those who are, there’s been a 67 percent drop in residential care. Savings from reduced residential care have been invested in community support systems.
