PORTLAND, Maine — The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded nearly $6.5 million in grants and loans for rural water and sewer projects in Maine.

The economic stimulus funding includes $3.1 million for Fort Kent, $2.6 million for the Boothbay Region Water District and $750,000 for Randolph.

The funding was announced Thursday by Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, who said it will repair and improve water treatment facilities and create jobs in the process.
