BANGOR, Maine — G.M. Pollack & Sons announced it will close its downtown Bangor jewelry store this Friday after 37 years in business. The company’s Bangor Mall location will remain open.

Store manager Cheryl Worcester, who will become the new sales manager at the mall location, said that although the downtown site has been doing steady business, having two stores in the same city is no longer viable, given current economic conditions.

“The Bangor Mall [store] does a whole lot more business than we do,” she said Wednesday. “We’re the smallest-volume store in the chain.” Keeping both locations open “just doesn’t make sense,” she added.

G.M. Pollack currently has 12 locations across Maine and one store in New Hampshire. Of the 11 Maine communities in which the jeweler has stores, Bangor is the only one with two.

Worcester, who has been at the downtown branch for almost half of her life, said the move will not be easy for her.

“It’s been a long, emotional two weeks,” she said. “I’ve been here about 24 years.”

Of the four employees at the downtown store, Worcester is the only one who will continue to work for G.M. Pollack.

“One [employee] was going away to school — she only had another week anyway,” said Worcester. The remaining employees — one full time and one part time — will be let go after the store closes, she said.

In early May, G.M. Pollack became the first employee-owned jewelry chain in Maine. The company, whose corporate headquarters is in Scarborough, is owned by a small group of upper-management employees, though Worcester said that “in the future, opportunities are going to be available to everybody.”

A corporate representative from the company declined to comment.

The store’s inventory will be dispersed among the remaining stores. Items being repaired and layaways may be picked up at the chain’s Bangor Mall location.
