BANGOR, Maine — A transient being held at Penobscot County Jail unable to make bail was indicted Tuesday by the Penobscot County grand jury for robbing two convenience stores using a toy gun in late March. He also is charged with breaking into eight storage lockers in four different locations between March 22 and 31 and stealing more than $10,000 in property.

Travis Gustin, 29, is charged with two counts of robbery, eight counts of burglary and four counts of unauthorized taking.

A Bangor man also was indicted Tuesday as Gustin’s accomplice in half of the break-ins.

Alan D. Perkins, 38, was indicted on four counts each of burglary and theft by unauthorized taking. Perkins, who also has been unable to make bail, is being held at Hancock County Jail so that the co-defendants remain separated until their case is resolved.

Both men are scheduled to be arraigned on June 19 in Penobscot County Superior Court.

Gustin allegedly robbed the Tom T. Irving Store at 1123 Broadway, also known as Route 15, in Bangor at 9:08 p.m. Saturday, March 28. He also allegedly robbed Sam’s Qwik Stop on Route 15 at 8:50 p.m. the next day.

In both cases, according to police, the robber wore a mask and pointed a handgun at the store clerk, and escaped with an undisclosed amount of money. No injuries were reported.

The gun turned out not to be real, Michael Roberts, deputy district attorney for Penobscot County, said Tuesday, so Gustin was not charged with armed robbery.

If convicted, Gustin faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000 on the Class B robbery charge. Both men face up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000 on the theft charges.
