Errant moose shot in Portland

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — A moose that wandered into Portland over the Memorial Day weekend was shot and killed by police after attempts to bring it down with a tranquilizer gun proved unsuccessful.

Officials said they were forced to kill the animal when it headed toward busy Forest Avenue.

The cow moose, which spent several hours in and around Baxter Woods, was shot early Sunday afternoon near the Deering Pavilion Retirement Center.
