ORLAND – Avis M. (Gray) Barker, 91, passed away May 23, 2009, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Aug. 31, 1917, in Orland, daughter of Linwood H. and Isadora (Saunders) Gray. She was a graduate of Eastern Maine Conference Seminary, Bucksport, and attended Castine Normal School. In March 1940, she married Elwood H. Barker. They settled in Orland, where they built their home and raised their family. Avis was able to remain in her home until she was 90. Avis was an avid reader, and loved and looked forward to visits and phone calls from her family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Jellison and her husband, Philip, of Bucksport; a son, Brian Barker and his wife, Marcia, of Orland; six grandchildren, Michelle Curtain and her husband, George Hillman, of Bucksport, Dawn Curtain and her partner, Joe Young, of Bucksport, Mary-Ann Maldonado and her husband, Randy, of Wilmington, Mass., Jessica Lawson and her husband, Joshua, of Bernard, Jephtha Urbanski and his wife, Katricia, of Lincoln and Chad Barker of Orland; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Alayne Perkins of Bucksport; brothers-in-law, Floyd Barker of Rochester, N.H., and Wayne Barker and his wife, Fern, of Milford; sister-in-law, Muriel Gray of Bucksport; nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Jean Dorr of Bangor. She was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband of 62 years, Elwood; and brothers, John Gray and Robert Gray. At Avis’ request, there will be a private graveside service at Oak Grove Cemetery, Orland, with Pastor Peter Remick officiating. Donations may be made in her memory to Orland Historical Society, P.O.
