GREENVILLE, Maine — The Independence Day celebration in Greenville will move to a new location this year because of the Junction Wharf project.

Instead of activities being held at the wharf, selectmen last week voted to move the festivities downtown.

While the wharf is open for boat launch traffic and truck and trailer parking, high water prompted officials to postpone work to replace the retaining wall. The grassy section where the restoration work began is fenced off for safety reasons, but town officials worried that with the large crowd expected some people would ignore that barrier.

The parade route, which has been reversed this year, will assemble in the Moosehead Industrial Park, proceed east along Pritham Avenue and end at the Village Food Mart parking area, Town Manager John Simko said Wednesday.

Town officials plan to petition the Department of Transportation to close down Route 15 on Pritham Avenue from the blinking light to Eveleth Hill for the day to accommodate the festivities.

In conjunction with the location change, fireworks will be launched from a barge in East Cove. While no vehicles will be allowed in the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife headquarters, pedestrians can view the fireworks from that area and the Maine Forest Service property, as well as other locations, according to Simko.
