AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. John Baldacci is using his weekly radio address Saturday to reiterate his promise not to raise “broad-based taxes” to balance the state budget.

Baldacci says he and lawmakers have taken what was already a smaller two-year budget than its predecessor and reduced it from $6.3 billion to $5.8 billion. He praised the Appropriations Committee for its bipartisan approach in further cutting the budget.

He says he’s encouraging lawmakers to continue that approach as the full Legislature begins debate on the budget in the coming week.

In the GOP response, Senate Minority Leader Kevin Raye says Republicans helped to craft a responsible budget. Raye says Maine faces unprecedented times, which call for bipartisan cooperation to make sure the state weathers the storm and emerges stronger.
