Maine speaker: Good lawyers needed more than ever

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — Graduates at the University of Maine School of Law were sent into the legal world Saturday with a simple message: “We need good lawyers more than ever.”

The message was delivered by commencement speaker Steven Greenhouse, a New York Times reporter, who also is a lawyer.

Greenhouse told the 93 graduates that in recent years, too many American corporations have acted improperly and illegally, and that evidently, too many of their lawyers and general counsels allowed them to do so.

He said he believes journalism and law share important goals: pursuing justice, rooting out corruption, making sure the truth is told, providing help to those most in need and working to ensure that government runs efficiently and honestly.
