HOULTON, Maine — When the weather gets warm, downtown businesses open up their doors and bring their goods outside for popular sidewalk sales, and artists and musicians frequent Community Park for concerts and exhibitions.

Officials at the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce believe that such events are instrumental in bringing people to the historic downtown, and they’re hoping a new feature this summer will attract even more shoppers.

The Chamber is hosting a meeting on Wednesday, May 27, to determine if any farmers, gardeners and crafters are interested in starting an outdoor community market in Houlton this summer.

The market would be held in Monument Park.

Lori Weston, the executive director of the Chamber, said that she is really excited about the prospect.

“I am really hoping to get farmers there who want to sell fresh produce, as well as crafters and those who want to sell baked goods,” she said.

Weston said she hopes the market can run from June to September, and possibly longer.

“I think this is a good time to start a community market,” she said, adding that there is increasing interest in locally grown produce and other goods.

The Chamber had considered having the market in the Temple Theatre parking lot in Market Square, but the area will be the site of major construction this summer. Coastal Enterprises Inc. intends to build a $2.5 million, three-story apartment complex for senior citizens in the back of the theater parking lot.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Council Chambers in the town office. Anyone who cannot attend but is interested should contact the Chamber at 532-4216.
