AUGUSTA, Maine — About a dozen gay-marriage supporters gathered in a park across the street from Maine’s Capitol to thank the Legislature for enacting the bill and Gov. John Baldacci for signing it.

Meanwhile, the California-based gay-lesbian rights advocacy group Empowering Spirits Foundation filed a complaint with the Internal Revenue Service on Wednesday that challenges the Catholic Diocese of Maine’s nonprofit status. Empowering Spirits says that by engaging in political activity aimed at overturning Maine’s law through a people’s veto referendum, the diocese is violating IRS rules applying to nonprofits.

Calls to Marc Mutty, public affairs director for the diocese, were not immediately returned.
