CASTLE HILL, Maine — Castle Hill Road was closed for nearly four hours Wednesday afternoon after a Castle Hill man died when his vehicle crashed into a road grader.

Terrance C. Lavway, 48, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred just before 1:30 p.m., according to Maine State Police Sgt. Julie Bergan on Thursday.

A Maine State Police press release indicated alcohol may have been a factor in the accident, but did not give any details.

Lavway was traveling south on Castle Hill Road when he came upon a state Department of Transportation road grader that was working on the road. The grader, driven by Raymond G. Putnam, 53, of Mapleton, was all the way onto the right shoulder in the southbound lane when Lavway decided to pass the vehicle, Bergan said.

Lavway apparently misjudged the distance between his 2006 Dodge Stratus and the 1994 grader and crashed into the left rear of the grader with the right front of the Stratus.

Bergan said Lavway was not wearing a seat belt and died of massive internal trauma. His vehicle was destroyed.

Putnam was uninjured and the state vehicle had minor damage.

State Trooper Robert Flynn is reconstructing the accident.
