Still aglow with ‘Idol’ moments

The original plan for this week’s column is going to have to take a back seat while we discuss the fantastic finale of “American Idol.”

Crowning Kris as the winner wasn’t the only shocking moment and The Man on the Couch and I were glued to our seats and took advantage of the DVR to hit rewind a few times.

Some of the performances may have been a little weak, but we have to give big props to Kara DioGuardi for showing up bikini girl in a big way. Not only did she outsing the wannabe “Idol,” she had the courage to bare (almost) all and was humbly shy about the whole thing. The one question left: Who paid for bikini girl’s new assets? Was it Simon?

As for the overall segment, I didn’t even care that the performance obviously was staged because it was so unexpected I found myself clapping from my corner of the couch like DioGuardi could hear me. In fact, I was so impressed that I think she ought to be named an honorary Mainer.

Yes, I realize there is no such thing. Either you’re born and raised here or you’re “from away.” Just the same, we think her performance, her engagement to Maine general contractor Mike McCuddy, and her house on the coast is enough to warrant the title. By the way, The Man on the Couch gives a big thumbs up to McCuddy.

Another performance that rocked our living room Wednesday night was Black Eyed Peas and Fergie. Even the censoring of a few naughty words (apparently the singer’s choice) was only a minor distraction and understandable considering it’s a family show.

Although we’re sad to see the end of the 2009’s “American Idol” season, we’re very excited for what’s coming up next.

“America’s Got Talent” has had us laughing, crying, covering our ears and begging for more all in the same night —and we’re ready for more.

The show kicks off at 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, and is being hyped as the best yet. I’m waiting for my preview to see if new host Nick Cannon can fill Jerry Springer’s shoes. I wish him luck, but I’m not holding my breath.
