BATH, Maine — Defense Secretary Robert Gates will be visiting Bath Iron Works on Friday to meet with shipyard employees and attend a precommissioning ceremony for a new destroyer.

The secretary’s visit was announced Wednesday by Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, an Armed Services Committee member who had invited Gates to come to Maine.

Collins, who plans to accompany Gates, said she’s delighted that he has agreed to tour the yard. The Republican said she’s sure that he’ll be impressed by its infrastructure improvements and by BIW’s dedicated work force.

The precommissioning ceremony is for the Wayne E. Meyer, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer that was christened last October. printed on July 26, 2017
