BANGOR, Maine — The newest additions to the list of America’s Healthiest Companies were recognized at the Well Workplace Awards celebration dinner on May 19.
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maine and Cianbro received the Platinum award, the highest granted by the Wellness Council of America, a national nonprofit membership organization dedicated to promoting healthier lifestyles for Americans through health promotion initiatives at work.
The state chapter, the Wellness Council of Maine, presented the awards at the annual dinner with Peter Vigue, president and CEO of Cianbro, as the keynote speaker.
The awards recognize organizations that have built successful wellness programs as defined by agency benchmarks, a rigorous set of criteria. More than 1,000 corporations, health care systems, public agencies and educational institutions have met those criteria and been recognized as some of America’s healthiest companies.
Nationally, only 14 companies hold the Platinum award, two of them from Maine:
• Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maine.
• Cianbro, which first achieved Platinum status in 2006 year.
Gold award winners were:
• Brewer Automotive Components.
• Millinocket Regional Hospital.
Receiving the Irv Marsters Wellness Champion Awards were:
• Occupational Medical Consulting in Leeds.
• Dan Dauphinee, individual category, of Northeastern Log Homes in Kenduskeag.
“The process required to submit a Well Workplace application is extremely rigorous,” said Jaime Laliberte, director of the Wellness Council of Maine. “The four companies receiving gold and platinum awards this year have a lot to be proud of. They have clearly demonstrated innovation, leadership and success in the realm of workplace health promotion. Anthem, Cianbro, Millinocket Regional Hospital, and Brewer Automotive Components are the types of companies a employee is happy to work for,” Laliberte said.
Vigue believes investing in employees’ health and quality of life is an investment in the company itself. That type of thinking is what led Cianbro to Platinum status for two consecutive years.
The Wellness Council of America defines a Well Workplace as an organization that has embraced responsibility for maximizing the health and well-being of its employees.
Companies that receive the designation are known as America’s Healthiest Companies because their wellness programs produce results. Well Workplace is a recognition program where an award can be achieved by any company, small or large, meeting the challenging standards set forth by the council.
