BANGOR, Maine — University of Maine System trustees have approved a tuition increase of nearly 6 percent for the coming academic year.

Chancellor Richard L. Pattenaude told trustees Monday that the system is cutting costs, but cost-cutting alone won’t be enough. He says the tuition increase, which averages 5.8 percent for full-time students from Maine, represents the smallest in seven years. Over that time, increases have ranged between 7 and 10 percent.

Pattenaude, whose contract was extended through July of 2011, will hear by the end of next month from a panel that’s looking for additional savings.

The task force led by former Central Maine Power President David Flanagan will recommend ways to restructure the seven-campus system.
