WEST PARIS, Maine — Officials are investigating an apparent accidental shooting that sent a 29-year-old man to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Police say Lael Scott was taken to Central Maine Medical Center after being shot at about 1 p.m. Sunday at a home in West Paris where he had been staying in recent weeks.

Sgt. Tim Holland of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office told the Sun Journal of Lewiston that 67-year-old Ernest Wesley was cleaning the gun when it apparently went off. Officials say Scott is originally from northern Maine and had been staying with Wesley and his wife.

A hospital nursing supervisor on Monday declined to release any information on Scott’s condition.
