PORTLAND — A Rhode Island man arrested after a 2½-hour standoff on the Maine Turnpike was being held Sunday at the Cumberland County Jail.

State police said Michael Ostrowski, 44, was speeding Saturday night and led police on a chase from New Gloucester to just south of the Falmouth exit, where his pickup truck ran over spike mats.

Police said the Warren, R.I., man refused to leave the truck and threatened several times to shoot himself or anyone who came near it. They said the weapons Ostrowski allegedly claimed to have turned out to be a BB gun and a cigarette lighter that looked like a pistol.

Police said Ostrowski surrendered about 11:30 p.m.
