Baldacci calls on lawmakers to act swiftly

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine Gov. John Baldacci is using his weekly radio address to urge lawmakers to move quickly to enact a two-year budget that carries with it painful cuts.

Baldacci says his two-year budget proposal marked the first time in 30 years that it was lower than the preceding budget. And that was before another $500 million in cuts.

He says “no department, no agency and no service” will go untouched. Already, lawmakers have signaled support for a one-time 5 percent pay cut for all state employees.

Baldacci says the only thing that would be worse is to delay the inevitable. He says a delay in passing the budget will only lead to greater uncertainty.
