HULLS COVE – Alberta J. Strout, 82, died peacefully May 7, 2009, at Sonogee Estates, Bar Harbor. She was born Sept. 7, 1926, in Bar Harbor, to Leslie I. Dunton and Dorothy (Reed) Dunton. Alberta grew up in Salsbury Cove above Dunton’s Store, which her parents owned and operated. She attended Bar Harbor High School, graduating in 1944. After high school, she worked for the telephone company in Bar Harbor while waiting for her love, Alvah Strout, to return from his duty in the U.S. Navy. In August 1947 the couple married. They raised six children in their home in Degregoire Park, which became a busy gathering place for their large family and many, many friends – all were welcome at the Strout house. Alberta’s career was primarily a homemaker. In addition to helping with her parent’s store, she also worked many years at Bar Harbor Lobster Bakes, the Pot & Kettle Club and numerous other jobs. She was a very loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her willingness to give up her time to care for the people she loved was one of her greatest attributes. Alberta loved boating on the ocean, snowmobiling, dancing and shopping trips with her daughters. She was so blessed to have a lifelong best friend in Elaine McFarland – best friends forever. After Alberta was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, her husband and family took care of her at home. After the death of her husband and the progression of her disease, Sonogee became her home. Alberta’s family is thankful to Sonogee. The loving care Alberta received from the staff there gave the family more quality time with her. She is survived by her brothers, Irving Dunton, Walter “Skippy” Dunton and his wife, Barbara, and Clifford Dunton and his wife, Sandra. She will be sadly missed by her six children and their families, Stephen Strout and his wife, Helen, Joseph Strout and his wife, Terry Levesque, Ann Cough and her husband, Steve, Jennifer Westphal and her husband, Michael, Janice Strout and her partner, Alex Kayner, and Penny Dunn and her husband, Tom; grandchildren include, April Cough Hansbury and her husband, Kurt, Ben Strout, Joelle Strout Rowe and her husband, Ernie, Andy Cough, Gabriel and Brendon Westphal, Elana Strout, Dustin and Daniel Dunn; and great-grandchildren, Georgia, Finn and Eli Hansbury. She was predeceased by her husband, Alvah; and her sister, Clodine Farnsworth. Services will be held 4 p.m. Monday, May 18, at Eden Baptist Church, Salsbury Cove. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Hulls Cove. If friends desire they may make memorial contributions in Alberta’s memory to Alzheimer’s Association, 170 Route 1, Suite 250, Falmouth, ME 04105 or Eden Baptist Church, Salsbury Cove, ME 04672.
