Deadline looms for Brewer Kiwanis talent show

The application deadline for the Brewer Kiwanis third annual “So You Think You Have Talent” Show, is Wednesday May 20, reports club secretary Herb Hopkins.

Auditions for the show, with a $1,000 grand prize, are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 31, at Brewer High School.

Dress rehearsal is 7 p.m. Friday, June 5, and the Talent Show is 7 p.m. Saturday, June 6, both at the high school.

Talent presentations can range from comedy to monologues, and competition is by age group: Up to 10, 11-8, and 19 and older.

Applications are available at Brewer High School, Brewer Public Library, all Gold Star Cleaners, Awards, Signage and Trophies in Brewer and, in Bangor, at Camden National Bank, Realty of Maine and Henry’s Formal Wear.

No applications will be available at the door, and all applications must be mailed to Brewer Kiwanis Club, P.O. Box 538, Brewer 04412, postmarked May 20.

Rory Schmand reports “It’s time for our annual Pirate Rec Day” to benefit the Pirate Rec Scholarship Fund to offer clinics and send area youth to camps.

Pirate Rec Day features a Tag-Bake Sale, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at the Sangerville Recreation Field that includes a 50-50 raffle.

A car wash is 9 a.m.-noon that day, at the Guilford Town Field, and a bottle drive will be conducted from 9 a.m. to noon that day as well.

Ray Estabrook e-mailed the Belfast May Sidewalk Sale and Family Fun Day, sponsored by Belfast Downtown Business Group, is 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 16, and includes everything from sidewalk chalk art to children’s activities and a Hopscotch Tournament, 1-3 p.m. behind City Hall, judged by members of The Game Loft.

And Dixie Wadleigh hopes you visit the Belfast Garden Club’s annual Green Thumb Sale, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. that day, at the Boathouse on the Belfast waterfront.

A twig trellis construction demonstration is 10:30-11:30 a.m. Proceeds from donated plant sales benefit the garden club scholarship fund for Waldo County high school seniors.

Don’t let the title fool you.

The Hampden Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary “Spring Fling,” 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at the Post Home on Canoe Club Road, is a sale featuring “plants, crafts, miscellaneous items, a raffle of gardening supplies, baked food and refreshments at noon,” Myrtle Ellingwood and Becky Martin explained.

Proceeds benefit the Auxiliary’s programs for “veterans and community service.”

The public is invited to enjoy a Swinging Evening by attending a Swing Dance starting with lessons at 6:30 p.m. and the dance at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at the Hampden Academy Stage, which, Anne O’Reilly reports, is the school’s “old gym.”

Admission is $15 for families, $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors.

The bands include the Hampden Academy Jazz bands, John Bapst Memorial High School Jazz Band, Reeds Brook Jazz Band and Queen City Big Band.

The Veazie Congregational Church Supper, 4:45-6 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at the church, 1404 State St., is a barbecue, and you can make your own sundaes for dessert.

Mark Tardif reports the first concert in the “full lineup of musical talent slated to perform through the summer” at Unity College is Assembly of Dust at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at Unity College Centre for the Performing Arts, 42 Depot St.
