Tremont OKs $3.6 million for town, school expenses

TREMONT, Maine — Voters took less than two hours Tuesday to adopt a combined annual budget of $3.6 million.

About 45 people attended Tremont’s annual town meeting Tuesday night at the town office on Route 102A in Bass Harbor, Town Manager Millard Billings said Wednesday.

They approved a municipal operations budget of $1,555,015 and a grammar school budget of $2,046,054 for the 2009-10 budget year, he said. That’s about $117,000 less in municipal operations and $77,000 less in grammar school costs than what the town budgeted for the current year.

The school budget ended up being about $20,000 less than expected because the school’s health insurance costs came in lower than school officials had anticipated, Billings said. But voters increased the amount the town is donating to the Red Cross, from the $100 recommended by town officials to the $789 requested by the agency.

Billings said the town is hoping to maintain its current tax rate of $8 for every $1,000 worth of a property’s value. What the town’s tax rate ends up being will depend on the state’s decision about revenue sharing and homestead exemptions, he said.

Elections were held Monday. There were no contested races this year for municipal positions, according to Billings.
