Man arrested after 5 car thefts in Belfast area

BELFAST, Maine — A Massachusetts man was arrested in connection with a car theft spree in the city and in neighboring Searsport, police said Wednesday.

Richard LaMarche, 33, of Woburn, Mass., was arrested on outstanding theft warrants from New Hampshire and Massachusetts, Police Chief Jeffrey Trafton said. He was being held at the Waldo County Jail pending extradition. He has yet to be charged for his involvement in the local car thefts.

Trafton said LaMarche was apprehended in Searsport around midnight on Tuesday after briefly fleeing an apartment and attempting to hide in nearby woods. Maine State Police Trooper Shawn Porter and his tracking dog Tex located LaMarche.

Trafton said five vehicles were taken during the spree, which began Monday. He said the incident remained under investigation and that others could be charged as well.

Detective Michael McFadden worked on the case until 5:30 a.m. Wednesday and returned later that day to continue his investigation. Searsport Police Chief Richard LaHaye was working the case with McFadden, he said.

One vehicle was found early Monday at an accident scene in Frankfort. Trafton noted that another vehicle was stolen from the Big Apple on Searsport Avenue in Belfast when the owner left the key in the ignition and the engine running while he went into the store. The owners of all five vehicles had left the keys inside, he said.

Four of the vehicles were taken from Belfast and one from Searsport. All were recovered. Trafton was unsure whether all of the vehicles had been damaged.

β€œHe has confessed to being involved,” Trafton said of LaMarche.
