AUGUSTA, Maine — A bill to prohibit recreational vehicles from parking overnight at commercial lots in Maine has been rejected after the sponsor said it would not correct the problem it’s meant to address.

The House on Tuesday voted to kill Rep. Anne Perry’s bill after the Calais Democrat said it was too broad. Perry also said she’s received e-mail from RVers who helped change her mind on the issue.

RVers say they’ve helped to defeat similar bills in Montana and Nevada.

The legislation was pushed by 275 campgrounds and owners. They said the measure would help local campgrounds and RV parks stay in business and allow the state to recoup money lost in state lodging taxes.
