AUGUSTA, Maine — A national bicycling group says Maine is the third most bike-friendly state in the country.
The League of American Bicyclists says Maine rose three spots in its 2009 ranking, based on a 75-item survey covering legislation, education, infrastructure and efforts to encourage people to ride bikes for transportation and recreation.
Allison Vogt of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine says Maine’s law requiring motorists to give three feet of clearance when passing bikes has become a model for other states.
Maine was No. 6 in the league’s initial ranking of Bicycle Friendly States last year. Washington and Wisconsin have held the number one and number two spots, respectively, for both years.
