ELLSWORTH, Maine — A Steuben man remained in jail on Monday after he allegedly threatened to kill his estranged wife and the staff of a local eatery.

Aaron C. Robinson, 44, was arrested Sunday after a Mother’s Day dinner in Bangor turned into a confrontation with his estranged wife.

According to Ellsworth Police Chief John DeLeo, Robinson, his estranged wife and their children were at a Bangor restaurant for a Mother’s Day dinner Sunday afternoon. During the meal, DeLeo said, Robinson became upset when he noticed a mark on the woman’s neck that he thought was a hickey.

Robinson then left the restaurant and allegedly took a hammer from his vehicle and pounded on the woman’s vehicle with it, according to DeLeo. He left the area, but made several phone calls threatening to shoot his wife.

“He also called his daughter and left a message that he was going to put a bullet in her mother’s head,” DeLeo said. “He also said he was going to go to the Friendly’s restaurant in Ellsworth and shoot everyone there.”

The man’s wife works at Friendly’s, DeLeo said, and Robinson was upset with the staff there. Based on those threats, he said, the restaurant’s manager decided to evacuate and close the restaurant. Officers from Ellsworth, the Maine State Police and the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department began searching for the man.

Meanwhile, Robinson went to his home in Steuben and allegedly removed some of his wife’s belongings from the building and set them on fire.

He was arrested Sunday night at his home and taken to the Hancock County Jail. He was charged with domestic violence criminal threatening, and, because of the threats to kill people at the restaurant, he also was charged with terrorizing.

DeLeo said Robinson likely will face charges in Bangor stemming from the damage done to the woman’s car and in Washington County for the fire damage done to her belongings.

Robinson remained in custody Monday night. He is being held on $10,000 cash bail.
