AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. John Baldacci says the past week will be remembered for action Maine took “to break down inequality.”
In his weekly radio address, Baldacci says he was fulfilling his constitutional duty in signing the bill to recognize gay marriages in Maine. He also says the new law does not force any religion to recognize a marriage that falls outside of its beliefs.
Baldacci acknowledges in his prepared address that the issue may be far from settled because a people’s veto campaign has begun.
The governor says that as momentous as the week has been, a lot of work remains to be done on the state budget. He says there are a lot of difficult decisions to make and government must move quickly.
