Old Town man indicted in 2 camp molestations

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A 59-year-old man from Old Town suspected of molesting boys at a religious youth camp was among 62 people indicted Friday by a grand jury in Aroostook County.

Robert “Red” Bartlett has been charged with two counts of unlawful sexual contact and one count of gross sexual assault stemming from alleged incidents at Living Waters, a Bible camp in Danforth.

Aroostook County District Attorney Neale Adams said the allegations involve two victims who recently came forward to police independently.

“It’s pretty unusual that two people will come in separately and tell similar stories,” Adams said Friday. “I think in instances like this it’s hard to imagine that there are not other victims.”

No one answered the phone at the Living Waters camp on Friday. It was not clear whether Bartlett was a counselor there or how long he has been affiliated with the camp. Adams said he did not want to release much information out of respect for the victims, both of whom were under age 14 when the alleged incidents occurred.

“If there are other victims, we certainly hope they come forward,” Bartlett said.

Also indicted on Friday was Brian McBreairty, 41, of Sebago, on multiple counts of burglary, theft and aggravated criminal mischief.

Adams said McBreairty is suspected of breaking into town offices and business throughout Aroostook County over a five-month period dating back to last fall. The district attorney said the charges, which involved several thousand dollars of stolen cash and other items, were the result of a Maine State Police investigation.

“[Detectives] were able to connect the crime scenes based on similar MOs [modes of operation] and evidence, real ‘CSI’ stuff,” he said. “We’re happy to see it broken.”
