LEWISTON, Maine — A 36-year-old Sabattus man who shot his father to death during his 65th birthday party in Lewiston won’t be getting out of prison early.

The Sun Journal of Lewiston says Justice Joyce Wheeler has rejected Scott Poirier’s motion seeking a reduced sentence.

Poirier was convicted of manslaughter in the 2006 shooting death of his father and sentenced to five years. At his trial, Poirier claimed he was suffering from an “abnormal condition of mind” because of sexual abuse he’d suffered at the hands of his father.

Poirier’s attorney said the sentence should be reduced because the judge had said that Poirier would spend roughly two years in prison after factoring in time served and good behavior, meaning he would be released in 2010. But corrections officials say he won’t be eligible for release until 2011.
