The Bangor Daily News is announcing the creation of a new weekly newspaper, the Midcoast Beacon, which will be mailed free of charge to every household in Waldo and Knox counties, as well as Waldoboro in Lincoln County, beginning Thursday, May 21.
Patterned after The Weekly, which the BDN has published successfully in the Bangor area for more than seven years, the Midcoast Beacon will be a community news source for readers in 43,000 households and businesses. It also will have an online component at maineville.com, part of the BDN Web site.
Now is the right time for the new venture, according to BDN Executive Editor Mark Woodward. “Our goal is to provide readers in Waldo and Knox counties with a superior community newspaper distributed to everyone — residents and businesses,” he said Friday.
Woodward said the Midcoast Beacon “is distinctive and important to residents of the two counties because a single publication reaching a broad audience in a targeted geographic area can help bring communities together. Businesses, nonprofits, schools, medical institutions — anyone interested in communicating with the entire midcoast area by contacting a single information source can now do that with the Beacon and maineville.com.”
Advertising Director Mike Kearney of the BDN said he has been “greatly encouraged and gratified” by the response of the midcoast business community.
“Its support is vital to the success of this product, and businesses we speak with are looking forward to the first issue of the Beacon,” Kearney said.
The Midcoast Beacon will offer feature stories by BDN reporters Walter Griffin, Abigail Curtis and others, as well as photographs by BDN photographers. A standing feature will be the Beacon Question, which gives people the opportunity to share their views on a wide variety of topics.
Readers are welcome to send in information and photos for community news, school news, health news, business news, calendar listings and sports news.
The Beacon will be under the direction of editor Roxanne Moore Saucier and assistant editor Ardeana Hamlin, the team that edits The Weekly, a publication that serves 54,000 households in three counties. Both are Maine natives.
Saucier is a 22-year veteran of the Bangor Daily News and writer of the Family Ties genealogy column in the Monday edition of the BDN.
Hamlin is an eight-year veteran of the BDN, writer of the By Hand column in the Tuesday edition of the BDN and a Maine novelist.
They will be assisted by Heather Steeves, a 2009 graduate of the University of Maine.
“The Weekly has been very popular in the Bangor area,” Saucier said. “Readers really enjoy information on arts activities, concert and museum exhibits. We also specialize in the good news involving our youth and community organizations.”
Information and photos for the Midcoast Beacon are due seven to 10 days before the Thursday of publication. They may be sent by e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org or mailed to Midcoast Beacon, P.O. Box 1329, Bangor, ME 04402.
All items are subject to editing for content and space limitations.
