DEXTER, Maine — Residents in SAD 46 and the town of Harmony voted during a referendum Tuesday to reorganize as an Alternative Organizational Structure.

That last-minute move will ensure that neither the SAD 46 towns of Dexter, Exeter, Garland and Ripley nor Harmony will face educational penalties. SAD 46 would have lost $161,000 in subsidies and Harmony would have lost about $22,000, according to SAD 46 Superintendent Kevin Jordan.

The combined result in the district was 239 yes and 25 no. Harmony voted 72 yes and 34 no.

“I think it’s a positive vote,” Jordan said Tuesday night. “With the revenue shortfall that’s predicted in the state of Maine the first thing this guarantees us is that we’re not going to get the $161,000 penalty.”

While SAD 46 and Harmony together do not have the required minimum enrollment of 1,200 students, they do qualify for an exception because the Exeter and Harmony schools are rural small schools. Combined, SAD 46 and Harmony have about 1,130 students.
