Sen. Snowe discusses economy with Obama

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — Sen. Olympia Snowe, meeting one-on-one with President Obama on Monday, said she emphasized the need for aggressive policies to free up credit for small businesses. She also said she reiterated her commitment to comprehensive health care reform.

As ranking member on the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, the Maine Republican said she expressed to Obama her concern about a lack of credit for small businesses that are struggling to remain afloat in tough times.

Snowe also highlighted bipartisan legislation she plans to introduce this week to allow small businesses and the self-employed to join in multistate health insurance pools that provide access to affordable coverage.

Snowe said she used the opportunity of the White House meeting to urge the president to consider appointing a woman to fill the Supreme Court seat being vacated by Justice David Souter.
