Palmyra man crashes car into utility pole

HARTLAND, Maine — A Palmyra man was taken to Sebasticook Valley Hospital with minor injuries after a car crash Monday morning on Canaan Road.

Thomas Schmidt, 44, leaned over to grab his coffee, according to Somerset County Deputy Don Avery, and lost control of his 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis at about 8:30 a.m.

The car struck and sheared off a utility pole. Avery said power to the surrounding neighborhood was out for at least an hour. The road was shut down for a brief period to allow for cleanup and repair.

Avery was assisted at the scene by Maine State Trooper Jon Brown and Sebasticook Valley Ambulance Service.
