BASEBALL

Bowdoin sweeps Colby

At Waterville, Brendan Garner’s seventh-inning single drove in pinch runner Nick Tom to complete Bowdoin College’s sweep. Dan Hicks had singled to start the rally and was replaced by Tom. Jason Ko-perniak and Kevin Zikaras homered for Bowdoin and Zikaras had two hits, as did Adam Marquit and Garner. Kyle McKay had a triple and two singles for Colby and Ken Kaufman singled twice. In the opener, Matt Ruane belted a pair of two-run hom-ers, Hicks had four hits, Reid Auger homered, and Joe Berte had a pair of hits and two RBIs. Ryan Con-lon had a pair of homers and four RBIs for Colby. Craig Cooper homered and doubled and Brendan Gallagher had an RBI double. Joe Pace worked six innings for the win and concluded a 7-0 season.

Southern Maine sweeps Plymouth State

At Gorham, Penobscot’s Collin Henry homered, hit three doubles, drove in four runs, and pitched eight innings of one-run ball in the nightcap as the University of Southern Maine swept Plymouth State in their Little East Conference Tournament series. The Huskies will host the four-team, double-elimination semifinals and finals beginning Thurs-day at noon. USM’s Anthony Pisani had five hits, including three doubles, scored four times, and drove in a pair of runs in the doubleheader. Josh Mackey had three hits and six RBIs. Anthony D’Alfonso set a USM single-season RBI record when his sacrifice fly in the nightcap gave him his 71st RBI. Mike Eaton hit a two-run homer in the opener for the winners. Tim Therrian went six innings for the win in the opener. Jay Kleponis had two hits for Plymouth State in the second game.

Saint Joseph’s sweeps Bates

At Standish, Wade Oliver knocked in five runs as Saint Joseph’s College topped Bates College of Lewiston 16-11 in the first game. The Monks also won the second game 10-5. Chris Burke set Bates’ single-season hits record after the second game by getting his 52nd hit, besting the mark set by Brian Mahoney (50) last season. In the first game, Oliver homered, doubled and singled with two runs scored for Saint Joseph’s. Chris Campbell hit four singles and scored three runs and Ben Grant-Roy homered and singled with three RBIs. Pat Moran hit a home run, Travis Adams tripled and Michael Burdin had two RBIs. Mike Ciummei led Bates with three sin-gles. Tyler Maxwell and Dave Ferrell homered. In the second game, Todd Keneborus had a triple, two singles, four RBIs and three runs scored for the Monks. Moran tripled, doubled and singled with three runs scored. Campbell had three singles and Craig Woodbrey tripled. Bates’ Ciummei hit a home run, Chris Burke doubled and singled with two runs scored and Tom Beaton doubled.

Maine wins two of three

At Burlington, Vt., the University of Maine took two-of-three from the University of Vermont over the weekend. Maine won the first game on Saturday 4-1 and lost the second game 8-4. On Sunday the Black Bears won 7-4. In Saturday’s first game, Alexis Souhlaris led Maine with three hits. Erin Iandoli hit a solo home run while Stephanie George added an RBI double. Jenna Balent tossed a com-plete game, giving up one run on four hits to earn the win. In Saturday’s second game, Kellin Haley drove in four runs on a triple and a single to spark Vermont. Brynne Davis hit three singles to pace the Black Bears. Ashley Waters had two singles and an RBI while Kristen Calvetti hit a two-run single. In Sunday’s game, Terren Hall hit a triple, a double, a single and drove in three runs to propel Maine. Gingrich posted a double and a single with two RBIs while Melinda Corssino added two singles.

Williams 14, Bates 6

At Medford, Mass., Williams College battled back from a four-run deficit to defeat Bates College and eliminate the Bobcats from the NESCAC tourna-ment Saturday. Becky Sansone had four hits and drove in three runs to lead Williams to the win. Leah Maciejewski had two singles and an RBI to pace Bates. Stacia Saniuk added two singles while Leah Citrin added a single and three RBIs.

Saint Joseph’s, Colby split

At Waterville, Alyssa Lepore hit a three-run dou-ble to lead Colby to a 4-0 win over Saint Joseph’s College in the second game of a Saturday double-header. The Monks won the first game 8-0. In the first game, Kiera Walsh and Michelle Provost com-bined on a two-hitter for the Monks. Anna Willis, Elizabeth Jordan and Alyssa Dunn each had two singes. Alex Essman hit a double for Colby. In the second game, Christine Gillespie had two hits and an RBI for the Mules. Emily Leverone had two sin-gles in the second game for Saint Joseph’s.

Mattanawcook 4, Foxcroft 3

At Foxcroft, Ivan Voisine doubled, singled and scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning to lift Mattanawcook Academy of Lin-coln past Foxcroft Academy. Tyler Tash pitched a complete game giving up six hits and striking out 12 to earn the win. Nathan Ireland added a double for the Lynx. Jamie Nason had three singles while Josiah Richard hit a double for Foxcroft.

Houlton 8, Presque Isle 3

At Presque Isle, Josh Harvey hit a three-run home run to highlight a five-run 10th inning as the Shiretowners topped Presque Isle. Levi Prosser had two singles while Corey Woodworth hit a triple for Houlton. Matt Chasse paced Presque Isle with two doubles and an RBI while Amos Dean had an RBI double.

Central 15, Hermon 4

At Hermon, Jacob Speed hit two singles, a double and drove in seven runs to power Central of Corinth by Hermon. Josh Collins added two singles, a double and five RBIs for the Red Devils. Corey Johnson and Jessie Graffam each had an RBI single for Hermon.

John Bapst 16, Old Town 1

At Bangor, Bill Wetherbee posted a double, a sin-gle and three RBIs as John Bapst rolled past Old Town. Chase Huckestein had two singles and two RBIs for the Crusaders. Miles Gagnon tripled and singled with an RBI while Nick Pooler doubled and singled with an RBI. Ben LeBreton paced Old Town with two singles. Nick Standley hit an RBI single while Cody Cross had a double.

Presque Isle 12, Houlton 0

At Presque Isle, Krista Coffin tossed a one-hitter with seven strikeouts as Presque Isle powered past Houlton. Chelsea Nickerson hit three singles to lead the Wildcats. Emily Currie, Allison Young, Alisha Palmer and Coffin each added two singles. Erica Lackey singled for Houlton.

Mattanawcook 5, Foxcroft 1

At Dover-Foxcroft, Taylor Trask pitched a com-plete game allowing one run on two hits with 15 strikeouts to lead Mattanawcook Academy of Lin-coln by Foxcroft Academy. Rianne Gardner had a triple, a single and an RBI while Vinni Nesin added a double, a single and an RBI for the Lynx. Courtney Withee and Jasmine Fletcher each singled for Fox-croft.

Central Aroostook 17, Van Buren 5

At Mars Hill, Vicki McIntyre had a home run, triple and three RBIs as Central Aroostook defeated Van Buren. Ashley Estabrook homered and singled with three RBIs for the Panthers. Jeanette Hallett hit a two-run homer and Kristen Long added a solo homer. Lindsay LaJoie had two singles, a double and two RBIs to lead Van Buren. Angela Richard singled twice.

Hermon 9, Central 1

At Hermon, sophomore Jess Devou allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out 11 to lead Hermon past Central of Corinth. Lily Barry tripled and doubled with two RBIs for the Hawks. Jaimie Beers had a triple, single and an RBI. Ashley Thayer doubled and singled and Devou singled twice. Kaitlynn Stymiest singled and scored a run to lead Central.

MDI 8, Ellsworth 3

At Ellsworth, Brigitte Pratt hit a two-run double as part of a four-run sixth inning as Mount Desert Island defeated Ellsworth. Mackenzie Curtis hit two singles and scored two runs for the Trojans. Shaye Domagala had an RBI single for Ellsworth.

Old Town 1, John Bapst 0

At Bangor, Whitney Leland drove in the game’s only run on a single in the sixth inning as Old Town edged John Bapst. Mckayla Gastia pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts to earn the win for the Coyotes. Tori Huckstein and Kylie Thibodeau-Harvey each hit a single for John Bapst.
