CORINTH, Maine — A thief left a blue baseball hat with a distinct teal clover at the scene of a home break-in last month, and police are hoping someone will recognize the hat and turn him in.

The thief or thieves who broke into the Ledge Hill Road home sometime April 8 or April 9 had to move a piece of plywood to get access to the back door, and left the hat behind, Detective John Trask of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department said Friday.

“We’re not talking about rocket scientists,” he said.

More than $15,000 in jewelry and a hand-carved rifle were taken from the home, and the victim’s list of stolen items keeps growing, Trask said.

He said the stolen gun is considered priceless to its owner.

The weapon is a custom-made Mauser .243-caliber rifle that was put together by the victim’s late father, Trask said.

“It’s a piece of art her dad made for her,” he said. “It is very important to her.”

The rifle’s stock is made from blond maple, has a carving of a bear coming out of the woods and is modified with a special trigger. It is topped with a Bausch & Lomb scope, has a leather strap, and its serial number is 9606.

“It’s a one of a kind rifle,” Trask said.

Most of the jewelry is described as Southwestern-style, some with turquoise and others with dancing Kokopelli figures.

“Folks were away from their home and when they came home [on the morning of April 9] they found forced entry had been made through the back,” Trask said. “That’s where we located the baseball hat.”

The hat has been sent to the crime lab for DNA testing, Trask said.

Those who might recognize the hat or who have information about the rifle or home invasion may call Trask at 947-4585, ext. 122.
