MADAWASKA, Maine — A local resident is behind bars at the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton after allegedly smashing a store window and making off with an undisclosed amount of jewelry.

Madawaska Police Chief Ronald Pelletier said Wednesday afternoon that the burglary took place around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday at Roberts Jewelry on Main Street.

The chief said that Luis Alduende-Villa, 33, a native of Puerto Rico who resides in Madawaska, allegedly smashed the store’s front display window before stealing a number of items that were in the display area.

Pelletier said the items included rings, watches and bracelets.

Madawaska police Officer Carroll Theriault investigated and soon came into contact with Alduende-Villa, who claimed he did not speak any English.

The U.S. Border Patrol came to the scene and helped question the man.

Alduende-Villa eventually was arrested and charged with burglary and theft, both of which are felonies.

He remained in jail Wednesday afternoon pending arraignment, according to the chief.

Police are not releasing a dollar amount on the stolen jewelry, but some of the items have been recovered, according to Pelletier.
