BELFAST, Maine — The Game Loft has announced that the Maine Commission for Community Service named James Knight its Youth Volunteer of the Year for 2009.

Knight received the award at a ceremony in the Hall of Flags at the State House in Augusta on Tuesday.

Knight is the son of Joel and Maret Knight of Belfast and a student at Belfast Area High School. He has performed volunteer activity for The Game Loft as a member of its board of directors and through running games for younger players. This year he initiated a snow shoveling service for elderly or disabled people in the community. He not only shoveled mountains of snow but he also recruited other teens to help in this volunteer activity.

Knight will be honored by The Game Loft board with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 24, at Scoops Ice Cream Parlor in Belfast. The public is invited to take part in the celebration. For information, call The Game Loft at 338-6447.

The Game Loft provides an environment where young people are guided to become caring, competent, confident, contributing and connected adults. The Loft is open 2-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and 2-8:30 p.m. Friday. All programs are free and open for people ages 18 and under. For information visit thegameloft.org or call 338-6447.
