Kidnapping charges dropped against Portland pair

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — Kidnapping and other charges have been dropped against a Portland man and woman who had been charged with holding a 67-year-old man captive in his Portland apartment.

Forty-one-year-old Belinda Libby and her boyfriend, 45-year-old Peter Sullivan, were charged in December with assaulting the man, disconnecting his phone and holding him captive for 18 hours. The defendants passed polygraph examinations this month and prosecutors then decided to drop the charges.

Libby told the Portland Press Herald that she and Sullivan didn’t do anything wrong, and that the alleged victim fabricated the story. But she felt they might not get off because they were poor.

Libby and Sullivan spent more four months in jail because they couldn’t make bail.
