Should more of UMaine’s sports programs be eliminated?

Last week, the University of Maine announced it was suspending the men’s soccer and women’s volleyball programs as cost-cutting measures. Is this short sighted? Don’t sports add to the quality of the college experience and help the university draw in the general public? Or does the fact that few Maine students participate in these programs make them prime targets for cuts? Should UMaine focus on just a few sports (hockey, basketball and football)? What about doing less recruiting of out-of-state athletes and instead encouraging Maine students to fill out the rosters? Should the university focus on more intramural programs?
