AUGUSTA, Maine — A bill urging Congress and the president to increase weight restrictions on trucks using Interstate 95 is moving through the Legislature.
The Senate passed the resolution earlier this week.
The resolution petitions for federal action to allow trucks weighing up to 100,000 pounds to use I-95 north of Augusta. Trucks weighing in excess of 80,000 pounds now must switch to local roads after leaving the Maine Turnpike.
Supporters say lifting the weight limits will make local roads safer, reduce damage to roads and reduce truckers’ fuel bills. The measure is sponsored by Sen. Elizabeth Schneider, D-Orono.
The House is expected to take up the measure soon.
