The Maine State Police on Thursday arrested a man who taught science at Mount View Junior High School and charged him with possession of child pornography.

Michael Douglas, 41, was arrested in Augusta after a weeklong investigation and taken to Kennebec County Jail, said Lt. Gerard Madden of the state police. His bail was set at $1,000 cash, according to a jail official, and he was released Thursday evening.

When pressed for details, Madden would say only that the “investigation started in Waldo County and it is still ongoing.” He would not divulge any further information about the case.

Mount View Junior High School is in Thorndike in Waldo County.

Earlier this week, state police detectives were at the school complex to interview students as part of the investigation. On Wednesday, Superintendent of Schools Joseph Mattos declined to comment on the police investigation, but he did say that there had been a recent resignation for personal reasons and that the person involved had been instructed to keep away from school property.

Douglas was still listed as a science teacher at the school on Thursday evening on the SAD 3 Web site. SAD 3 serves the communities of Brooks, Freedom, Jackson, Knox, Liberty, Monroe, Montville, Thorndike, Troy, Unity and Waldo.

Efforts to reach Mattos on Thursday evening were unsuccessful.

According to Madden, Trooper Corey Smith is in charge of the investigation, and he is working with detectives from the state police criminal division.
