SEARSPORT, Maine — An SAD 56 elementary school music teacher has been arrested on felony charges of gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact.

William A. Wiley, 39, of Bog Hill Road in Searsport was arrested Wednesday evening at the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department after a two-day investigation. He was charged with one count of gross sexual assault and four counts of unlawful sexual contact and taken next door to the county jail where he is being held on $1,000 bail.

SAD 56 Superintendent of Schools Ray Freve on Thursday declined to comment on the matter, other than to say that Wiley had been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.

Chief Deputy Robert Keating said the charges involve a girl who was 12 years old at the time the alleged crimes began. He said the sexual activity continued over a six-month period until the girl was 13 years old. The victim was not a student of Wiley’s, Keating said.

Keating said Detective Jason Bosco began investigating Wiley after being alerted to the accusations by the Department of Health and Human Services. The victim told Bosco that the incidents took place five years ago.

“Mr. Wiley came in to meet with Detective Bosco and was placed under arrest following an interview with the detective,” Keating said Thursday. “This was an accusation that occurred in the past and recently came to light.”

According to an affidavit filed in 5th District Court, Bosco said he was advised of the allegations by Deputy District Attorney Eric Walker on Monday. Bosco said he met with the alleged victim and she said the abuse began when she was in the seventh grade.

Bosco said the girl told him the abuse started with kissing and continued almost nightly with Wiley initially touching her, then exposing himself to her and escalated to having her fondle him. She told Bosco the abuse finally ended when Wiley hurt her while attempting to have intercourse with her one night. She said she reacted by threatening to expose him unless he stopped. She told Bosco that Wiley never abused her again.

According to the affidavit, the girl told Bosco that Wiley told her on several occasions that what they were doing was “their secret and not to tell anyone.” She also told Bosco that Wiley told her he knew what they were doing was wrong.

Bosco said that when he brought Wiley in for an interview Wednesday and told him of the accusations, Wiley “became extremely emotional, breaking out into tears.” Bosco stated that after “many emotional outbursts, William confessed that he abused” the girl.

Bosco stated that when he asked Wiley whether the victim had any reason to lie, he replied that “everything she said was the truth.”
