PORTLAND, Maine — Sen. Susan Collins says she and two Senate colleagues got an earful from Russian leaders on the Bush administration’s proposed missile defense in advance of their travel to Poland and Czechoslovakia.

The Maine Republican says the Russians want better relations with the U.S., but remain convinced that the missile defense targets Russia, not Iran.

The Bush plan called for 10 missile launchers in Poland and a radar site in Czechoslovakia. The Obama administration has put the proposal on hold.

Speaking Tuesday from Moscow, Collins says she supports missile defense, but isn’t stuck on any particular sites. She’s traveling with Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, and Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida, who along with Collins serves on the committee.
