ALFRED — A former juvenile probation officer who was honored last year for his work with youth is free on $500 bail after being charged with felony possession of child pornography.

John Nevers made his initial court appearance late last month. The 42-year-old Standish resident is accused of possessing sexually explicit material involving images of youngsters under age 12 that were allegedly found on two computers issued to him at his Saco office.

The Corrections Department said he was terminated from his job.

Neither Nevers nor his lawyer could be reached for comment.

A 2008 recognition award to Nevers by the Department of Education cited his work to prevent students from dropping out of school and his role as a mentor to adolescents.
